Annapurna Base Camp Trek Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp trek combines the incredible views from popular vantage point Poon Hill, with a moderate trek right into the heart of the Himalaya. When you stand in Annapurna Base Camp you’re literally surrounded by high mountain peaks. It’s the most amazing feeling, whatever the time of year! We spend the evening here and wake up early to watch the sunrise over the Annapurna giants. Get ready to create a memory you’ll never forget!

Travelling to Pokhara

We’ll be waiting to pick you up when you arrive at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport. You can choose to travel straight to Pokhara or spend some time relaxing and exploring Kathmandu before you trek.

Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna Base Camp trek and the second largest city in Nepal, is often known as the adventure capital. Phewa Tal (Fewa Lake) is the city’s key feature. On a still day, you can gaze at the beautiful mirror images of the Annapurna’s reflected in the water. Pokhara is the perfect place to relax and have fun! Ask us about including one of the many adventure activities including paragliding and white water rafting in your itinerary!

Trekking to Ghorepani Poon Hill

The incredible mountain views are just one of the rewards on offer when you trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill. It’s possible to bypass Poon Hill and trek straight to Annapurna Base Camp if you’re short of time. But you’ll miss out on one of the best vantage points in the Himalaya. On the trek you’ll get a taste of the ‘real’ Nepal as you slowly ascend through rural countryside. You’ll see emerald green rice fields, lush forests rich with flora and fauna, and villages where the smiles of the Nepali people are infectious! If you’re trekking in March or early April, prepare to be amazed! You’ll see large forests of bright, colourful Rhododendrons native to Nepal.

Soak Up the View

We hike up to Poon Hill from Ghorepani just in time to see the sunrise. The spectacular view includes the seventh highest mountain Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft) and the tenth highest mountain Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545ft).

From Poon Hill, we continue our trek and observe the mountains getting closer. Hike through beautiful forests, across swinging suspension bridges into a stunning mountain landscape. On this trek you get two base camps for the price of one! We also pass through Machapuchare (Fish Tail) Base Camp.

The Main Attraction – Annapurna Base Camp

After lunch at Machapuchare Base Camp we start our hike up to Annapurna Base Camp. Words can’t describe the panoramic view that awaits you. All your hard work will be well worth it as you feel the mountains literally rising up to greet you. We spend the night in this Himalayan wonderland (4,130m/13,550ft) and rise early to watch the sun turn the mountains golden.

On our return from Annapurna Base Camp it’s possible to loop back a different way and relax in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda. The hot springs are situated on the river bank and surrounded by lush forest. They’re a perfect reward at the end of your trek!

Back to Kathmandu

You can choose to fly or return to Kathmandu by bus. Kathmandu is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so you’ll be sure to want to see some! Get more ideas about what to do in this Kathmandu Travel Guide.

After another 90 minutes we reach our lunch stop in Banthati. Then we push on for about three hours to Ghorepani, taking a break half way at Nagathati. During the afternoon, we ascend through lush forests of rhododendrons. Trek in March and early April to see them in full bloom – an incredible sight! We stay overnight in Ghorepani. The moment you’ve been waiting for! We have an early start to climb about 45 minutes to Poon Hill before sunrise. Then pick your spot, get your camera ready and watch possibly the most impressive sunrise you’ve ever seen! Tick off ten mountains over 7,000m/23,000ft – Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV and V, Gurja Peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna South and Gangapurna. In awe, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing our trek. After an hour’s climb, we have a great vantage point on the other side. We then slowly descend to the far side of Banthati for lunch. Tadapani is our overnight stay and we arrive there after a steep descent, followed by a good climb through the forest.

Next stop is Chomrong where we enjoy an amazing view of Annapurna South, Himchuli, Machapuchare and Annapurna III. After a steep descent down steps for 30 minutes, we reach the river and cross a suspension bridge, before climbing back up for another 90 minutes to Sinwa, where Annapurna III and Machapuchare seem closer than ever!

Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (5 hours walking)

Day seven is challenging as we ascend almost 1,000m/3,280ft. But you’ll forget about your legs when you see the amazing panoramic view opening up around you! The route we take depends on the time of year, as there is an avalanche risk zone between Deurali and Machapuchare Base Camp. We never risk your safety, so in spring we must take a slight detour. After two hours we reach Machapuchare Base Camp and have lunch. We then hike up to tick off your second base camp in one day! The scenery between the two base camps is absolutely spectacular. We spend the night in the heart of the Annapurna Himalaya at Base Camp.

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda (1,760m/5,774ft) and a dip in the hot springs! ~5 hours walking

Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all downhill from here! Ask any Nepali – what goes down in the Himalaya must go up! On day ten we hike up gradually for 90 minutes to Sinwa, down for an hour to the river, across the suspension bridge and steeply back up to Chomrong. We lunch here before an easy 45 minute descent to Jhinu Danda where we spend the night. After this challenging trek, you’ll be glad to soak in the relaxing hot springs before dinner!

We finish with an easy hike and meet a jeep to take us back to Pokhara in time for lunch. The rest of the day is yours to explore Pokhara or just relax with a drink and stunning mountain view. Boating on Phewa Tal (Fewa Lake) is a must and we think there’s no better time than at sunset. There are lots of other things to see and do in the adventure capital of Nepal, so consider staying a few extra days to soak up the vibe!
